100 Percent Population Mauritania Islamic Religion
Probably not many people
know that Mauritania is one of the countries in the West African region is
currently implementing Islamic sharia as state law. Islam is applied in all
sectors of life, whether social, political, cultural, and economic.
This fact is not
surprising if you view the religion professed by almost all the people of
Mauritania. The population census of 2004 showed that 100 percent of the
population is Muslim Mauritania. They follow the Maliki school, one of the four
main schools of thought known in Islam.
Mauritania is a former
French colony, has been an Islamic republic since it gained independence in
1960. In 1985 the Constitutional Charter declared Islam the state religion and
Islamic law the legal framework of the country.
While the Constitution
that was ratified on July 20, 1991 stated that "the Islamic Republic of
Mauritania is irreversible '. Furthermore, in Article 5 of the Constitution
stipulates that 'Islam is the religion of the population and the country'.
The second assertion
indicates that Mauritania is not a secular state, like most other countries in
the area of the black continent. Therefore, not surprisingly, Mauritania
national language is Arabic, in addition to French and local languages, such as
Pulaar, Soninke, and Wolof which is also widely used by residents of
Mauritania.
